Protect Your Back While Moving! Top Tips From Your Bowie Chiropractor

At Taber Chiropractic, one of the common problems Drs. Ted and Dr. Diane Taber evaluate and treat is back pain secondary to moving boxes or lifting heavy objects. This type of injury commonly occurs in the workplace for people who have physically demanding jobs. But back pain can also be due to heavy lifting at home--or while in between homes!

Helpful Tips For Back Safety While Moving From Your Bowie Chiropractors

  • The old adage is true: lift with your legs, not with your back. But what does that mean exactly? Too much flexion and rotation in the spine--especially while holding a heavy load--can lead to injuries including muscle strains, ligament sprains, and disc herniations. When moving boxes, think of your spine as one solid plank. Avoid twisting and bending in the back, or lifting boxes that are too heavy to do alone. If you have to pick up a box that is low to the ground, squat down to it by bending your legs, then lift the box.
  • Use tools as needed. Moving dollies, pads, and other equipment can decrease strain on your body. Of course, ask friends and family members for help (buying lunch never hurts!). Avoid over-packing boxes to reduce excessive weight.
  • Take rest breaks. Sit, stretch, and hydrate regularly throughout the moving day.
  • Feeling sore after moving day? Don't delay. Consult with your local chiropractor as soon as possible. Early examination and treatment can accelerate healing, reduce inflammation and pain, restore normal mobility,  and maximize your overall recovery.  Chiropractors are trained in biomechanics, or the study of human movement. This means they can offer valuable education on safe body mechanics during physical activities.
