Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a symptom of a condition related to the largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve provides feeling to the back of the leg, into the sole, and controls the muscles behind the knee and lower leg.

Sciatica symptoms occur anywhere from the lower back to the toes, and can include:

  • Loss of muscle control
  • Numbness
  • Radiating pain
  • Tingling

Symptoms vary from mild to severe and usually occur on one side of the body or the other. More severe cases of sciatica impact bowel and bladder function.

What causes sciatica?

Injury

An accident or injury to the discs located between the vertebrae of the spine can trigger sciatica. Damaged discs can slip out of place, putting pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain and discomfort.

Slipped disc

Slipped discs, which are caused by wear and tear with age, are the leading cause of sciatica. Pain is caused by the discs pushing on local nerves, but sometimes the jelly-like substance inside the disc also leaks out and irritates surrounding nerves.

Spinal stenosis

Most common in men and women over 50, spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spine that puts pressure on the nerves and spinal cord.

How is sciatica treated?

A pinched sciatic nerve leads to a host of unpleasant symptoms from agonizing pain to muscle weakness.

Chiropractors Dr. D and Dr. T easily recognize the tell-tale signs of sciatica and confirm the diagnosis with diagnostic tests, as they understand that ruling out conditions that cause similar symptoms is crucial to proper treatment.

Once your sciatica is confirmed, they use a painless, non-invasive treatment plan to relieve your symptoms including:

  • Chiropractic adjustments: To correct alignment issues putting extra pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • Corrective exercises: To strengthen leg and back muscles to support normal spine alignment
  • Impulse iQⓇ adjustments: Handheld device offering gentle and precise disc correction
  • Mechanical Traction: To decompress discs, pulling them away from the sciatic nerve

Surgery isn’t the preferred method of sciatica treatment for most people, and you can become pain-free without surgery or drugs. Book your appointment online or over the phone with Taber Chiropractic & Laser Spine Therapy Center to find out how today.
