Herniated Disc

Herniated discs are a common back injury, and they can keep you from living your best life. Here's how our Bowie, MD chiropractor can help treat your herniated disc, so you can live a happy, healthy life.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc is a back injury where a disc in your spine is injured. The discs have two parts. The gel (inside), and the tough, fibrous outer casing (outside).  When that casing tears, the soft interior of the disc can bulge, protrude, or herniate.  This can irritate the nearby tissues and nerves.  Sometimes the injured disc can be adjacent to the nerve, and sometimes it can displace the nerve.

The big problem with herniated discs is that they can be very painful, locally, over the injury, or they can cause radiating pain into the arms or legs.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

There are several symptoms you may notice with a herniated disc. Recognizing those symptoms early on is the key to effective treatment. Back pain is the primary symptom of a herniated disc, but there are several other symptoms you may also experience as a result of this injury:

  • Pain that radiates through an arm or leg
  • Numbness or tingling in the back that radiates into the arms or legs
  • Weakness into the arm, hand, leg, or foot

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, you may have a herniated disc.

Herniated Disc Treatment

As far as treatment goes, you've got a couple of options with a herniated disc. Some people opt for surgery to treat a herniated disc, while others simply rest and take painkillers. The truth is, both of those treatment options can come with a lot of negative side effects.

If you're looking for natural herniated disc treatment and back pain relief, a chiropractor can help. Spinal adjustments can help relieve pressure in your spine to allow your herniated disc to heal. MLS Laser can reduce the inflammation, and spinal decompression can also provide relief.  Not only can this help speed up the recovery process, but you also get pain relief.
