Herniated Disc Q & A

What is a herniated disc?

Twenty-six bones, or vertebrae, form your spine. Soft discs filled with a jelly-like material cushion these bones. Discs protect vertebrae from the shock of motions like running and jumping, and they also maintain a constant amount of space between vertebrae.

Age, disease, or injury can cause the hard outer cartilage of discs to tear or crack. This is what’s known as a herniated disc. Herniated discs are often incredibly painful, as damaged nerves inside the disc fire off pain signals.

Sometimes, the disc’s inner material leaks out, inflaming nearby spinal nerve roots throughout the neck and back. The nerve roots then send pain, numbness, tingling, and other sensations throughout the body.

What are the signs of a herniated disc?

Herniated discs usually occur in the lower back and neck. Symptoms vary from person to person, but may include:

  • Numbness or tingling: usually experienced in the area near the affected nerves
  • Pain: usually in the shoulders, arms, buttocks, or lower leg depending on where the herniated disc is located
  • Weakness: muscles served by affected nerves weaken, causing impaired function

How is a herniated disc treated?

Studies show that 90% of men and women with herniated discs find relief through chiropractic care in as little as three months. The Drs. Taber use diagnostic tests including MRI and X-ray to determine if a herniated disc is the cause of your pain. A neurological exam is also used to assess your muscle strength, reflexes, and ability to feel sensations.

If Dr. D and Dr. T confirm you have a herniated disc, they create your personalized holistic treatment plan. Advanced chiropractic procedures are used to gently and effectively correct the position of your discs and vertebral joints. Through chiropractic care, the Drs. Taber significantly reduce painful nerve compression and inflammation.

At Taber Chiropractic & Laser Spine Therapy Center, the goal is not to mute pain with medication, but instead treat the underlying issue causing pain, for lasting results without dangerous side effects. To take the first step toward relieving the pain of your herniated disc, call or go online to book your consultation today.
