TMJ Dysfunction with our Bowie Chiropractor
Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw bone to your skull. Several things can lead a disruption in the normal alignment and function of this joint, including direct trauma to the head, jaw, or neck (e.g., whiplash or a sports-related injury), stress, arthritis, grinding your teeth, or misalignment of the disc within the articulating space.
So, do you know if something is up with this joint, and what can be done to fix it? Read on to learn more.
Signs & Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction
People with TMJ dysfunction often report a sensation or even sound of clunking, clicking, or popping in their jaw, either on one or both side. They may also feel like their jaw becomes "locked" or as if it may move out of place at times. This is especially common upon first waking up or after/during eating.
Other symptoms include:
- Pain, tenderness, and/or fatigue in the face, jaw, neck, and shoulders that worsen when you move your mouth
- Difficulty with opening the mouth wide (e.g., on a dentist chair)
- Difficulty chewing, or a sudden difficult bite
- Swelling on the side of your face
Chiropractic Treatment of TMJ Pain
One of the first approaches of chiropractic management of TMJ pain is to evaluate a person's posture and spinal alignment. Very often, a person's spine will influence the position and function of the neck and jaw.
One of our chiropractors in Bowie, Dr. Theodore Taber and Dr. Diane Taber, can then adjust your spine based on the results of his or her postural analysis. This can relieve pressure, pain, and tension on the jaw and help normalize jaw alignment and function.
Supplementary techniques that help realign the TMJ, reduce pain, reduce swelling, promote tissue healing, and prevent recurrence may include lifestyle and workplace modifications, postural/neuromuscular retraining, and oral exercises.
